We live in the greatest nation on earth! I was driving home from waving signs at 17th Street and US1 today and one of my favorite Toby Keith songs started playing on the radio: “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue”.
Toby Keith wrote this song in response to the 9/11 terrorist attack against our nation and it quickly topped the charts.
Listening to the song took me back to that time. It also reminded me that our nation is once again under attack but this time it’s different…
Our “foe” appears to be more “domestic” than foreign and our “foe” seeks to pit Americans against one another through the concept known as “identity politics”.
Our nation is on a dangerous and destructive path with an uncertain future if Americans don’t band together against this common enemy, stand united, and fight for what it truly means to live in the greatest nation on Earth!
There is an old story about Benjamin Franklin being approached by a group of citizens when he exited the Constitutional Convention. They asked in earnest about the form of government the delegates created and his answer was simply “a republic, if you can keep it.”
We can keep our republic but we must work together to understand and appreciate our differences while we work together to solve our problems. We must not allow racism or other forms of discrimination to divide us. When we do, we create opportunities for those who seek to destroy us and our way of life.
Liberty begins at home and while we are Americans, let our “identity” be Indian River County. Let us create our own “identity politics” founded on the belief that there is nothing we can’t accomplish when we work together!
This is where we live, this is who we are, this is what we must do…
WE are Indian River County!
Happy Independence Day! God Bless America and enjoy the song.
